サラ・マクラクランの『Angel』は、
（"In the Arms of the Angel" "Arms of the Angel"とも誤って呼ばれる）
スマッシング・パンプキンズのサポートメンバーのキーボード奏者、
ジョナサン・メルビンに捧げられた。
ジョナサン・メルビンは、1996年、マンハッタンのホテルで、薬物のオーバードーズによって亡くなった。同室で薬物を摂取していたドラマーのジミー・チェンバレンは逮捕され、バンドはチェンバレンを解雇するという苦渋の決断に追い込まれた。
また、サラ・マクラクランは、ローリングストーンについての記事―
ミュージシャンらは、音楽業界の重圧を抱え、その代替えに薬物で対処し、
その後、過剰摂取するようになる―というものを読みインスパイアされたと述べている。
「私は、―自分がめちゃくちゃになり、自分が何者であるのか解らなくなり、
とても戸惑い、惨めになる。そして、逃避の道がそこにある―という場所にずっと身を
置いていた。私はヘロインを使ったことはないが、
逃避するために他の多くの事をやった。」
また、彼女は、この曲は、
「他の人の問題に責任を負おうとしないこと、同時に自分自身を愛する努力」についての歌だと語った。
