踵を返すように直ぐそばのハーブ店へ

Another day, we enjoyed a packed one-day trip for a Bayou (Swamp )Tour

and one of Plantation Homes by a local tour company.

別の日には　地元ツアー会社の

スワンプツアー　や　プランテーションの一日ツアーも楽しみました。

本物のサイプレスに感激し

好きなマグノリアの花が咲いていたかは

記憶にないのですが

5月のような太陽光を浴びた

新緑の微妙な色の重なりにため息の連続

赤ちゃんワニ抱っこは　私も娘も　初体験

本や映画で得た知識　奴隷制度が

淡々と語られていました。

歴史博物館や　プランテーションツアー

商業中心地外の　地元の方々に出会い

「こんな過酷な歴史は絶対に繰り返さない」と

強く思っている私がいた。

to have some café au lait, a mixture of strong chicory coffee and hot milk,

and BEGNETS(英語 benyays べニア), ベニエ　square French doughnuts.

帰り道　女性バスドライバーさんが

（希望者には）(フレンチマーケット近くにある）

カフェドモンデで降ろしてくれ

濃いチコリコーヒー　と　ホッとミルクでできた

カフェオレと

ベニエ　四角いフレンチドーナツを食べました。

運転手さんのこの言葉が忘れられません。

「観光客の人たちは　ここに住みたいというけれど

ハリケーンが　ほんとうに怖いのです」　と

その5年後の２００５年に　

カトリーナ　ハリケーン大災害　胸が痛みます

The FLOOR in the Café was all over 

with white powdered sugar. 

We were stunned by the sight. 

Can you see that powdered sugar floor in Japan? 

The coffee and doughnuts were so great 

that I couldn’t forget that taste, 

and when I found the same name of the Café 

near Ikebukuro station in Tokyo. 

I was so excited but something was different 

from the original Café.

あちこちにこぼれていて

私たちはその光景にびっくりしました。

コーヒーとドーナツは　本当に美味しくて　

その味は忘れられません。

アメリカの野球場もベンチ近辺、

ピーナツの殻などカップも平気で

捨てていくのですよね。

飛行機のビジネス席回りも　乱雑

アメリカの捨てる残す文化　

アメリカ人でも靴を脱いで生活している家庭も

いるとは聞いていますが

はてさてどうなんでしょうか？

今後　変化があるのでしょうか？

「カフェ　ド　モンド」

東京　池袋駅の近くに同じ名前のカフェがあって、

すごくワクワクしたのですが、

本店とは　どこかちょっと違っていました。

床に粉砂糖アートがなかったからでしょうか？　

大きさが四角ではあったものの

日本人向けに　小さかったからでしょうか？

その後　残念ながら 池袋店は閉店していました

We took a streetcar up and down

to grab a piece of pecan pie and muddy chocolates outside of the center.

私たちは　ピーカンパイ　や　マディ（どろ）チョコレートを買いに

路面電車で　行ったり来たりしました。

One day  when we were on the streetcar to Tulane College 

which is used to be famous for the movie 

“The Pelican Brief （ペリカン文書）1993年 by John Grisham

ある日　ジョングリシャム作のペリカン文書の映画ロケ地で

有名になった　テュレーン大学へ向かう路面電車に乗っているとき

An unbelievable thing happened. 

It was really funny to see 

that a conductor suddenly stopped the streetcar 

to buy his own lunch in front of the hamburger shop. 

It never happens in Japan.

信じられないことが起きました。

とてもおもしろいことなんですが、

運転手さんがハンバーガーショップの前に突然電車を止めて

自分のランチを買いに行ったのです。

日本ではありえないことですよね。

At the streetcar stop, a guy spoke to us, 

we began to talk about Tokyo Subway Train System. 

He said, ”The map of Tokyo Subway Lines is like spilled spaghetti.”

It is a great picture. I was so impressed with his imagination.

電車の乗降場で、男性に話しかけられ

私たちは東京の地下鉄の話を始めました。

彼は　東京の地下鉄路線地図は　（地面に）こぼしたスパゲッティみたいだね

A visit to New Orleans with my daughter is my most memorable trip.

First of all, we love black music like jazz, soul, R&B, blues, Gospel music, 

quite a few types of music that come from Africa.

Moreover, I wanted to feel the real dialect in New Orleans.

The owner of BB inn we stayed, who said to us 

even if we want to learn spoken English,

New Orleans’ dialect can’t be a good model.

But to me, their speaking is like Sounds of Music.

娘とともに訪れたニューオリンズが一番印象深く記憶に残る旅行です。

先ず、私たちはジャズ　ソウル　Ｒ＆Ｂ　ブルース　ゴスペルのような

かなりたくさんのアフリカをルーツとするブラックミュージックが大好きなのです。

さらに、私はニューオリンズの生の方言を感じたかったのです。

私たちが宿泊したＢＢのオーナーさんは　私たちに言ったのですが

たとえ話し言葉を学びたいとしても、ニューオリンズの方言は良いお手本にはならないよ。と

でも、私は　彼らの話し言葉は　音楽を聴いているように感じるのです。
 

It was the middle of March in 2000 after Mardi Gras Carnival, 

which New Orleans is famous for. 

When we got out of the gate at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, 

（by the way, I like the name of this airport,）

the air full of warm, moist, and humid 

that I had never felt before our landing, 

we were wrapped with the welcome air coming from the Mississippi River 

that isn’t like Okinawa’s bright air.

are all packed in the French Quarter.

Walking along Bourbon Street at night, 

we could hear music coming from a club after a club for free. 

When we went into a club we chose finally, 

at the door we were required to show our IDs by a guy.

My daughter showed it right away but I had my passport inside of my clothes, 

so I told him that mine was on my stomach.

He said with a big smile, “ I believe YOU are OVER 21.”

He really made us laugh and let us get into without showing my passport.

夜にバーボンストリートを歩くと

私たちはミュージックチャージを払うことなしに

あちこちのクラブから流れてくる音楽を聞くことができます。

やっと決めたクラブに入った時、

入り口でＩＤを見せるように係りの男性から言われ

娘はすぐに見せたのですが

私のパスポートは洋服（ワンピース）の中に入れていたので、

彼にパスポートはお腹のくっつけていると言うと

大きくにっこりと笑って、「21歳以上だと　信じるよ」

と言って、私たちを笑わせてくれ

パスポートを引っ張り出す必要もなくクラブに入れてくれました。

【解説】

Dry spellは本来、雨が全く降らない「乾期」を指す表現ですが、

日常会話では

「欲しいものが手に入らない期間」

「やりたいことができない期間」

意味としても使われています。

ビジネスでは、

「商品があまり売れない時期」

「お客が少ない時期」

などを意味し、商売の閑散期を表します。

その他、

「性的に枯れている期間」

も意味しますので使い方には注意しましょう。
