India has just transmitted unhackable encryption keys through the air using #quantum physics: no cables, no fiber optics—just #photons and the laws of nature.
Overnight on September 27–28, 2026, Indian researchers successfully established a quantum link between two buildings separated by 5.56 kilometers.
Unlike a conventional connection, no cable linked the two locations; the information needed to create the keys traveled as light directly through the atmosphere.
The principle is fascinating: the keys are generated using the quantum properties of photons—the tiny particles that make up light.
If anyone attempts to intercept and measure these quantum states in transit, they risk disturbing them and causing anomalies detectable at both ends.
During the experiment, the quantum error rate remained below 5%, while the system generated between 230 and 260 bits of secure key per second.
The researchers then integrated these keys into an encryption platform to protect a real message, send it, and successfully decrypt it upon arrival.
India does not plan to stop at this 5.56-kilometer range; the country is already working on much larger #quantum networks.
A key goal of its National Quantum Mission is to develop secure quantum communications over distances of up to 2,000 kilometers using satellite links.
The experiment could thus foreshadow a future where some of the keys protecting our communications travel directly between the ground and space.
This is a #technology where detecting a spy no longer relies solely on software, but also on the fundamental properties of matter and light.
