Bodega Norton

Q: I've heard various knowledgeabl

e wine drinkers say that one of the reasons Bordeaux makes such great cabernet sauvignons is that it's had hundreds of years of experience with the grape as compared with, say, California, where cabernet sauvignon is relatively new. Is this true?

A: Not exactly. First, DNA fingerprinting reveals that cabernet sauvigon is not a particularly old variety. Scientists think the grape is the propitious result of a natural cross about 300 years ago between cabernet franc and sauvignon blanc. And Bordeaux's experience with cabernet is also not as extensive as many wine drinkers believe. As late as the late 1700s, it was planted with approximately 30 red varieties of grapes and another 30 whites. Among them, cabernet sauvignon was not considered a major variety - its rise to prominence did't happen until the 1820s.

In California, cabernet was planted in what is now Los Angeles es early as the 1830s, definitely qualifying the state as having hundreds of years of experience! But the first remarkable cabernets took a while - they were probably those made in the late 1800s at the majestic Inglenook estate on the Rutherford Bench in the heart of tha Napa Valley.
