Montepulciano D'Abruzzo
Summer Sipping
Come summer, I crave wines that are pure, fresh, young, and vivid - wines that feel as precise and invigorating as ocean water or mountain air. No wines fit this bill better than the wines of Alsace. These are summer in a glass. Since they are namede for their grape variety, not their place of origin, Alsace wines are very easy to understand. Here's a mini guide to the big five, all of them white:
Riesling: The queen of Alsace, riesling is the source of many of the region's most exquisite wines among the world's most powerful and intense.
Gewurztraminer: Exotic and enticingly aromatic, Alsace gewurztraminer is spicy, rich, dry, and bold. A favorite choice with spicy or Southeast Asian dishes.
Muscat: Hauntingly dry, hedonistic, and vividly fruity, muscat is redolent of peaches, orange peel, tangerine, and musk. A favorite summertime aperitif.
Pinot gris: Native to Alsace (and later brought to Italy, where it became known as pinot grigio), pinot gris has tasty almond, herb, smoke, and hay flavors.
Pinot blanc: Simple and satisfying, this is the roundest of all Alsace wines. Think of it as a baby sister of chardonnay.
