Prieure Saint Jean De Bebian 2002
Wines for the fourth of July
If beer has been the beverage of choice for your Fourth of July gatherings in the past, why not try some wine this year? It's appropriate, since several of our Founding Fathers were great connoisseurs of wine. To determine which wine, the advice is simple: Start with sparkling.
Whether your holiday celebration will feature hot dogs and potato salad or fancier fare, dry and off-dry sparkling wines get top marks for food friendliness. The wines' bubbles and acidity both have palate-cleansing properties that help them pair well with food, yet they are subtle enough not to overwhelm vegetable-based summer dishes. And their festive effervescence is almost like fireworks for the palate!
Given the Fourth's easygoing vide, all sorts of sparklers are a possibility: Champagne, of course, but also California sparkling wine and Spanish cava. A few to try: Moet & Chandon's White Star Champagne (about $35), Schramsberg's Mirabelle ($21), and Freixenet Cordon Negre Brut (about$12)
