Avignonesi(medium bodied dry red)
Principal grapes: sangiovese, canaiolo nero, mammolino
Origin: Tuscany, Italy
Price: $24
Of the three historic Tuscan red wines, Chianti, Obrunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the last is probably the best kept secret. Richer and fleshier than Chianti but ofetn half the cost of brunello, a great Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is spicy and minerally with brooding chocolate and black fruit flavors and that signature hint of saltiness that often graces the best sangioveses. This Avignonesi is always one of the top examples; it's a wine so dense and cocoa-y that it's reminiscent of molten chocolate cake.
