The "snowflakes"you sometimes see on the bottom of a cork or floating around in the wine itself are crystals of potassium bitartrate(the same substance used in making cream of tartar), They are harmless, tasteless bits of natural tartaric acid that occasionally separate out of the wine. White wines are the most apt to develop them, and they generally occur because of a rapid and extreme drop in temperature, as when wine is taken out of the hot trunk of a car and put in the freezer. Ultimately, tartrates have no effect on the taste of the wine, so no need to worry.
