CLOS ERASMUS full bodied dry red
Principal grapes: garnacha, cabernet sauvignon, syrah
Origin: Priorat, Spain
Price: $150
Sometimes it takes no more than a whiff of a rare wine like this to evoke an almost primal emotional response. In my own notes, I rated Clos Erasmus 98 to 100. But frankly I coudln't write fast enough. The wine simply engulfs you with wave after wave of chocolate, dried cherry, cinnamon, and spicy flavors-all of which are explosive and seductive. The texture is as thick as crushed velvet, although at the same time the tannin here is profound, portending a wine sure to mature well for at least a decade. Quite possibly the most exciting wine in Spain, as you'd expect, it's expensive and hard to put your hands on, but it's well worth seeking out.
