南アフリカ共和国の政治家。反アパルトヘイトの活動家。1960年代に国家反逆罪で逮捕され、27年間の投獄生活を送る。
釈放後は、アフリカ民族会議（ANC）の副議長→議長をつとめ、1993年にノーベル平和賞を受賞。翌94年の4月、南アフリカ初の全人種参加選挙にて、第8代の大統領に就任した。
ユネスコ平和賞、アフリカ賞、サハロフ賞、ノーベル平和賞、国際検察官協会名誉賞などを受賞している。まさに現代の偉人と呼ぶにふさわしい人物。

南アフリカのアパルトヘイト（人種隔離）政策への反対運動を主導した故ネルソン・マンデラ氏が1962年に逮捕された際、米中央情報局（CIA）による情報提供が決め手になっていたと、英紙サンデー・タイムズが伝えた。元CIAのドナルド・リカード氏が亡くなる少し前に、同紙に明らかにした。

CIAがマンデラ氏を追跡していたと長年うわさされてはいたが、CIAは逮捕への関与が明らかになるのを避けようとしてきた。リカード氏が認めたことで、当時の機密資料を公表するよう求める声が強まるだろう。
ANCのジジ・コドワ氏は、CIAが今でも南アフリカの内政に介入しており、「体制転換」を望む勢力と協力していると主張している。
