McLaren MP4-12Cは、重量わずか80キログラムのカーボンファイバー製モノコック構造を採用している。McLaren社によると、このモノコックは、それに匹敵するアルミニウム製シャーシよりも25％軽量で、25％硬いという。ダッシュボード用支持構造体はマグネシウム製で、スチール製の構造体よりも75％軽い。[車両重量は約1.3トン]

ミッド・エンジンの良さを生かし、重量配分は前後43:57を実現した。フロントおよびリアのアルミ・サブフレームは、モノコックにボルトで接合されている。これにより、技術よりも資金の豊富な人が自分の12Cを壊してしまった場合に、より迅速かつ簡単に修理できるようになる、とMcLarenでは説明している。

オールカーボン製シャシーだと、事故→廃車（修理不能）のケースが多いらいいが、
この前後がフレーム構造なら、交換することで廃車を免れられそう。
しかも、このアルミフレームが、クラッシャブルストラクチャー（衝撃吸収構造）を兼ねると。
2014年までに毎年4000台の生産を予定しているらしい。

[07-Jul-2010] The new McLaren MP4-12C was given its public world debut at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed, held from 01-04 July. Current Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button and 2008 Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton delighted the crowds by driving a McLaren Orange Validation Prototype (VP) 12C up the famous Goodwood Hill on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Visitors at the event were also able to discover another 12C VP car finished in Volcano
Orange and fitted with lightweight forged alloy wheels as well as a 12C rolling chassis which were displayed on the McLaren stand. Video contains racing footage with Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel of the MP4-12C
