【中学帰国子女受験】英文エッセイに学ぶ

英会話教室コンサルタントの、船山直子です。
この4月、我が子は小６、小２に進級しました。
アメリカでは、8月が進級なので
学年に変更はないのですが
日本の学年だけ上がるって感じです。
そして、いよいよ、6年生の息子は受験生！
早いものです。
まだ帰国は決まっていませんが、
息子、日本の中学を受験します。
去年、一昨年はコロナの影響でたくさんの学校が
オンライン受験などの対応がされたそうですが
まだ来年は読めません。
多分、通常通りに戻るかなー。
4月に入ってから、毎日志望校はチェック。
いつホームページが更新されるか。。。ドキドキ。
さあ、そんな中毎週アメリカの大学院生（日本人）の
イケメン先生に、英文エッセイの家庭教師についてもらっています。
もはや、私の英語力では
息子のエッセイの添削はできません。
先日、なるほど！と思った英文エッセイの話を
シェアしたいと思います。
ちょっとマニアックですが、英語の先生にも勉強になる内容です。
エッセイのお題って
・10歳の自分に何かアドバイスするとしたら、何を言いますか？
・あなた自身を動物に例えるとなんですか？その理由は？
・将来あなたの子供たちに今年はどんな年だったと伝えるとき、どう表現しますか？
書けそうで書き出すと難しい、っていう問題が多いのですが、
こういうエッセイを通して、
試験する側って、その子の考え方を見てるんです。
お題を通して、どんな論理でエッセイを書いてくるか。
もちろん、文法や表現力なんかも問われますが
大切なのは、自分にしか書けない
実体験も盛り込んで具体的な理由（事実）を
語ること。
そして、エッセイの答えとなる一般的な論理に
しっかりと自分の体験談を結び付けられているかどうか、が
大切です。
ある練習エッセイの一部をご紹介
問題:
What do you think is the most important quality for becoming a leader in the international community?
Give your thoughts with reasons and examples.
この問題に対して、息子は1番大切なことは
"tenacity”にきめて書き出しました。
その中のどうしてtenacity が1番必要なことなのか、という１パラグラフはこんな感じ。
tenacityって、諦めない心、継続する忍耐とかそういう意味
初めに息子が自分で書いた具体的な自分の体験談
First, my experience as a leader proves that all good international leaders have to be tenacious. When I was in 4th grade, me and a group of friends attempted the tech challenge, it is a state-wide tech competition where there is a certain challenge you have to complete. I think that this situation applies to an international community because people in our group had different races. However, during our difficult preparation, covid came along. Due to covid we had to do everything online and some of our members started to lose hope. Nevertheless, I didn’t give up, I imbued my fellow teammates with confidence to finish what we started.Thanks to all of our tenacity we were able to win a prize and it was our first time getting recognized in California. To conclude, I am sure that if one is tenacious they will be able to be successful.
通常、パラグラフの初めって、Topic Sentenceと言って、そのパラグラフで言いたいことをまとめて書きます。
その際、必ず一般的な論理でないとダメなんです。
上の文章は、自分の経験がInternational leaderはtenaciousであることが大切だと言ってますが
小学生がいinternational leader である、とは一般論とは言い難く
そこに修正が入っています。
international community とは、確かに人種の違う人が共に存在する社会のことですが
だったらどうして、tenacityが必要なのか？を丁寧にしかも一般論で説明したのが、先生と直した以下の文章。

Topic sentence（必ず一般論で問題の答えとなる自分の考え）
An international leader should be tenacious since when a community with people with diverse backgrounds face a challenge, such a community tends to fall apart easier as they all have different views on a matter. However, this situation can be avoided if a leader shows tenacity and be the example for the group.
Connection:（初めに書いた一般論と後に続く自分の経験をつなげる文章）
An international leader doesn’t necessarily have to be well known like leaders of countries, but they can be a leader of a small organization or even a small group of people.
Detail: （自分にしか書けない経験談/ ”I”を主語に語れること）
For instance, when I was in 4th grade, a group of my friends and I attempted the state-wide tech competition, which initially was disastrous due to Covid forcing us to work online. This situation was especially difficult for my group since my team was consisted of people with different cultural background as they all had varied reactions towards the pandemic. Such challenging working conditions affected our efficiency and team morale, causing people to lose hope. Nevertheless, I didn’t give up and imbued my fellow teammates with confidence to finish what we started. Thanks to all of our tenacity we were able to win a prize and it was our first time getting recognized in California.
Conclusion:
To conclude, I am sure that if a leader is tenacious, they will be able to be successful.
長さだけでなく、後者の文章の中身の丁寧な書き方があるから
言いたいことがわかります。
はっきり言って、私もこの文章は書けないですし（笑）
中学受験で、どこまでが求められるのか
それはわかりませんが、大切なことをまとめておきたいと思います。
英文エッセイを書くとき
ひとつのパラグラフにこんなふうにまとめます。
・Topic sentence（一般論であり、問題の答えとなる自分の考え）
・Connection （一般論と自分の具体的実体験をつなぐ文章）
・Details（自分の体験談など具体例）
・Conclusion（そのパラグラフのまとめ

英文エッセイたるものについて、
自分も知識を深めているところです。
