Yukata is a traditional Japanese garment worn during the warm summer months. Compared with a formal kimono, a yukata is much lighter, simpler, and more comfortable to wear, making it perfect for casual occasions.

In summer, you can often see people wearing yukata at Summer festivals and fireworks festivals. They are also popular for special outings such as riding a yakatabune, a traditional Japanese boat where guests enjoy food and drinks while cruising along a river.

Yukatas are also commonly provided at Japanese inns and hotels as a form of sleepwear. Guests can often wear them not only in their rooms, but also while walking around the inn or enjoying its restaurants and baths.

Some hotels and restaurants even offer special summer experiences where guests can choose a yukata, traditional geta sandals, and a small bag to take home, together with a seasonal lunch.

There are many beautiful styles of yukata, but one of my personal favorites is the traditional indigo-dyed shibori yukata. Shibori is a Japanese resist-dyeing technique that creates distinctive, delicate patterns by carefully tying or folding the fabric before dyeing it.

The deep indigo color and unique texture of shibori make these yukata especially beautiful to me. They are a wonderful expression of the simple elegance of Japanese summer.
